The Chalk Man alternates between the main character Eddie’s adolescent days in 1986 and adult life in 2016. When they were younger, Eddie and his friends each had a color of chalk they used to leave messages for one another using stick men. Mysteriously, chalk men start appearing in white. White is the only color not used by Eddie or any of his friends. The chalk men are connected to several crimes around their town, including a vicious beating, ruthless bullying and the dismembered body found in the woods.
Thirty years later, Eddie and his friends all receive a letter in the mail with a chalk man. What Eddie thought to be a prank leaves one of them dead. Eddie tries to figure out what exactly happened all those years ago and in the process, he finds out everyone has secrets and some will do the unthinkable to keep them hidden.
With all the hype given to this book, I was excited to read it. However, it was a letdown in my opinion. Several explicit parts are included in the book which I thought were unnecessary to the plot and therefore, could have been omitted. The book seems a bit cluttered with all of the characters’ side stories.
In the end, I was left with several unanswered questions and felt like some of the storyline could have been wrapped up a little more.
